Brimmed Sailor Hats For Everyone!
The Origin of Brimmed Sailor Hats
According to some sources, the first sailor hats were first seen on sailors of English vessels in the early 1800's. These hats looked a lot like old-fashioned farmers hats, with a very large brim. Brimmed sailor hats have been a staple item in children's fashions for many, many years, especially for younger (pre-adolescent) boys. You may have seen old photographs dating from the Victorian era, with little boys wearing their cute little sailor outfits, with a big-brimmed sailor hat, which usually had ribbons tied around the hat, and which dangled down with 2 streamers in the back.
Brimmed Sailor Hats: An Updated Fashion Style
While many people would think that brimmed sailor hats are some sort of an old-fashioned style from the past, in fact there these are still being made - and worn - today. You can still find the modern counterpart of brimmed sailor hats in yachting and sailing clubs. Adult brimmed sailor hats are usually broad-brimmed, but are not made with the old-fashioned stream of ribbons. Instead, they are likely to be made of a lightweight, yet durable fabric. This style of brimmed sailor hats will provide maximum protection from the sun and water sprays while sailing. In addition, brimmed sailor hats will also typically come equipped with a string, leather or cord chin strap, that can be adjusted (tightened) so that the hat will not blow off into the water. Cleaning and Care of Brimmed Sailor Hats The care and cleaning of your brimmed sailor hat will depend on the materials used in its construction. First of all please keep in mind that no matter how gently you treat them, brimmed sailor hats will eventually get soiled - either from the environment or from your hands. If your hat is completely made of cotton you can probably just toss it in the washing machine and clean it that way (but don't do this if it has a cardboard brim, as it will get waterlogged). If your brimmed sailor hat has a plastic bill, of course don't throw it into the dryer, as the heat can (and probably will) melt or otherwise deform it. If your brimmed sailor hat is made of leather (a rarity, but a possibility nonetheless) then it can be cleaned only if you buy special cleansing agents. Some dry cleaners and tailor shops can also take care of this for you, but special care is needed. Many brimmed sailor hats are constructed out of woven straw - these can be easily cleaned up with soap and water. You may find a few brimmed sailor hats that are constructed from felt. These are normally cleaned with a very soft brush - called a hat brush - or with a damp (not wet!) towel if it gets dirty. If you cannot remove a stain from a felt brimmed sailor hat using one of these methods, then take your hat to a professional hat cleaner for special treatment.
